Ings, Kane & Haaland: How Man United's striker targets compare to Cavani in 2020/21

Manchester United need a new No.9 and it looks like we will sign one this summer.

We've been linked to Harry Kane and Erling Haaland for the longest time but on Wednesday, The Telegraph reported that we're also interested in Danny Ings (no, you read that right).

The Red Devils have gotten goals via Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford but Anthony Martial's lack of form and subsequent injury have affected our attack.

Thankfully, we signed Edinson Cavani last summer and the 34-year-old has made a real difference up front. But how do his numbers compare to our other targets? Let's take a look:

Erling Haaland

Haaland has scored 25 goals and provided six assists for Borussia Dortmund in 27 Bundesliga games this season. As one can see above, that's the highest among the other three players.

Haaland has averaged 3.3 shots per game and has an xG (expected goals) rate of 23.1 this season.

Harry Kane

Kane has scored 22 goals and registered a whopping 13 assists in the Premier League in 2020/21.

That's a fantastic contribution and it's no secret that Kane is a proven striker in the English league.

Kane has averaged 3.9 shots per game - more than Haaland - with an xG rate of 19.8.

Edinson Cavani

The 34-year-old has contributed with 10 goals and three assists which is not bad, considering he's not played as regularly to ensure he stays fit.

With an average of 1.3 shots per game, Cavani's xG stands at 7.4.

Danny Ings

And finally, we arrive at the name everyone's been waiting for.

The former Liverpool man currently plays for Southampton and has scored 12 goals and provided four assists in 25 starts for the club. That's a little poor when you realise Cavani has started only 13 times.

However, Ings has an average of 2 shots per game and an xG of 8 - both higher than Cavani.

Verdict

Ings is definitely not the answer but signing either Kane or Haaland would go a long way in boosting our options up top in the long run.

With both strikers pushing for an exit from their respective clubs, it'll be interesting to see who moves to Old Trafford.
