4 problematic positions Man United have right now – explained

To make a final push and bridge the gap between themselves and Man City, Man United definitely need improvements in more than one area of the pitch.

Here's Tribuna.com trying to figure out which positions should be the club's priority in the summer transfer market.

Centre-back

Harry Maguire might not be an ideal player, but he's undoubtedly Man United's best centre-back right now. The Europa League final (and several games before that) showed that the Red Devils got so used to his presence in the backline that when he was absent, it really felt.

Raphael Varane, Pau Torres and Jules Kounde are all mentioned among the potential additions - they are all very talented defenders, but with different strengths and levels of experience. Luckily, United have almost 3 months to figure out what exactly they need from a potential Harry Maguire's partner.

Defensive midfielder

Nemanja Matic is the only player who can be described as an out-and-out defensive midfielder, and he's not getting any younger or quicker. Scott McTominay looks more like a box-to-box player, while Fred is a funny one as he alternates between solid performances and much poorer displays.

No wonder Declan Rice features prominently in the transfer rumours - but West Ham will demand a fortune for their main star. So, it's up to United to decide whether this problem is so acute that they're ready to pay around ₤80m for a defensive player. They've been there before.

Right winger

Throughout this past campaign, this position was usually filled by either one of Mason Greenwood and Daniel James. However, Greenwood's qualities are better suited elsewhere, while James has one big strength but it's not enough to be a regular starter at a 'big six' side.

From the reports, it appears that Man United see it as a Jadon Sancho-shaped hole, and Dortmund have even made their task easier than it was last summer by lowering their price tag. Surely, this year is the year?

Striker

One can remember Edinson Cavani's form at the end of the season and wonder if United really need a new No 9. But let's face it, the Uruguayan veteran was not fit for the entirety of the campaign, and it would be naive to presume that his fitness issues will be fully behind him one year later.

Neither Marcus Rashford nor Anthony Martial are fully comfortable leading the line and, unless the club believes that Greenwood will make a massive leap forward in terms of his development, they don't really have a clear first choice there.

Which positions do you think are the biggest issues for Man United currently?
