'Football can be cruel': Paul Pogba reacts as France crash out of Euro 2020

In a heartfelt statement on Instagram, Paul Pogba said: "Sometimes football can be cruel… cruel and also beautiful.

"Yesterday, the game brought us sadness but happiness to our opponents. That’s the beauty of football. Of course, we all wished that we could have had a positive result."

The Manchester United midfielder added: "Thank you so much to all of our fans across the globe. It was beautiful to see you, to hear you, and to celebrate with you. You gave us hope and joy throughout all of our games. We will keep our heads up and we will come back stronger.

"Finally, I want to wish congratulations to Switzerland."

France lost 4-5 on penalties to Switzerland, who are through to the quarter-final and will face Spain.

Pogba was spotted showing his desire to win the Euro 2020 at all costs and this obviously is a setback for the 2018 World Cup winner.

Nevertheless, the 28-year-old enjoyed a fantastic campaign for his country despite the loss.
