Throwback to United's win over Wolfsburg in 2009 when Sir Alex defeated Germans with just one fit defender

Sir Alex Ferguson's 26-season career at the helm of Manchester United had a number of unexpected wins and comebacks, including the iconic 2-1 victory against Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final.

It would be fair to say that the Red Devils' 3-1 victory over Wolfsburg in the 2009/10 CL group stage is one of them.

Sir Alex only had one fit defender in Patrice Evra at his disposal at that time as United were going through arguably the worst injury crisis of Ferguson's reign with 13 first-team players on the sidelines.

Moreover, United were stripped of the services of Wayne Rooney on that night in Germany who was left in Manchester to recover from a hamstring problem.

Still, Sir Alex managed to find an answer to his squad woes as he partnered Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher in the heart of his defence while Evra and Ji-sung Park covered the left and the right flanks respectively.

Nani, Darron Gibson, Paul Scholes and Danny Welbeck formed United's four-man midfielder on that night.

Anderson, meanwhile, helped the Red Devils' only striker Michael Owen in the No.10 position.

You'd probably be surprised to find out that it was Owen who scored a hat-trick at Volkswagen Arena back then to secure a top spot for United in their CL group.
