Explained: John Murtough's two biggest priorities at Man United after summer transfer window

Manchester United have missed out on signing a defensive midfielder but other than that, it's been a great summer window.

We brought in Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, Tom Heaton and, of course, Cristiano Ronaldo while Daniel James was sold to Leeds.

However, there are two pressing concerns that remain for director of football John Murtough before the window reopens in January:

1. Pogba's future

Paul Pogba has less than 12 months left on his current contract, meaning he could sign a pre-contract agreement with a different club in the winter window.

He could also leave for free next summer, which would cause a devastating blow to the club's finances.

Despite his agent Mino Raiola's best efforts, Pogba could actually change his mind and 'sign da ting', so to speak. With world-class players like Varane, Ronaldo and Sancho in the mix, United seem like the place to be.

And extending Pogba's stay would signal a solid statement of intent to our rivals.

2. Sign a DM

With our current squad depth, the Red Devils are capable of a Premier League title challenge but the addition of a defensive midfielder in the winter could prove to be a masterstroke.

Time and again, our lack of a solid player in that position has cost us during games - the most recent example being the scrappy 1-0 win over Wolves. Deployed deeper than usual, Fred struggled with his positioning and decision-making even though he did the defensive work well.

Saul Niguez has joined Chelsea and Eduardo Camavinga has signed for Real Madrid but there are plenty of options in the market for the Red Devils.

Declan Rice, for instance, is a target as well but it all depends on how much West Ham want after demanding £100 million already.
