Man United 0-1 West Ham: LIVE updates, reactions, stats, ratings

✍ Player ratings are coming up shortly, here's a brief overview of the game.

Man United have paid the price for the slow start at Old Trafford. West Ham were only the better side in the first 10 minutes, but it was enough for them to score the game's only goal.

Since then, United desperately looked for an equaliser but were hardly close to it.

In the first half, United tended to try and convert one of many crosses into the box from Dalot and Telles. However, with Martial as the forward, all those attempts were futile.

The best chance came after the break when Greenwood just came onto the pitch and arrived into the box, but his shot was saved by Areola.

In the final minutes, West Ham were closer to doubling their lead, but Dean Henderson and a goalpost denied them.

Overall, it was a hugely dispiriting performance up front and as a result, an opportunity wasted to compete for the trophy.

🏁 Full-time. Man United are eliminated from the Carabao Cup.

⌛ 90' Four added minutes.

@colinmufc2, Twitter: "We’ve been so good but the final ball or the luck of the bounce hasn’t been there"

⌚ 86' How did Yarmolenko not score! He got around Henderson but hit the post! Henderson then saves after Noble's one-on-one. And then Bowen's low shot. United's defence all over the place.

⌚ 83' Fernandes tracks back and stops West Ham's counter-attack with a brilliant sliding tackle. What can't he do?

@AnnemarieDray, Twitter: "Bruno Fernandes what are you doing tracking back like that you incredible human being."

⌚ 78' Bruno attempts a long-range shot, goes wide.

LennonC123, Reddit: "We just don’t seem to have enough to be able to break down their 5 man defence, the early goal killed us"

🔄 72' Bruno and Elanga coming on for Lingard and Telles. Wonder who's going to play left-back now.

Arth_, RedCafe: "Elanga playing as left-back. Very interesting."

sarthakjain24, Reddit: "At least Donny plays a full 90"

🔄 62' Greenwood comes on for Mata and immediately has a great chance, should've finished better!

@UnitedStandMUFC, Twitter: "What a ball from Donny into Greenwood! Should have scored."

platiunmbd, Reddit: "Greenwood has done more in 10 seconds than Martial did in the whole match."

⌚ 60' Matic is naughty.

@sistoney67, Twitter: "Naughty that from Matic. Kneed Coufal somewhere delicate after the ball had gone."

⌚ 58' Dalot shoots wide. It was United's 14th shot, only one of them was on target.

⌚ 54' Bruno and Greenwood warming up. WIsh it did not come to this...

constantly_late, Reddit: "I wish they didn’t need to see any minutes, but slide Mason on at the 60-65 mark to see if that’s enough to tip the scales. Gives him a solid 10 to save the other starters from unnecessary minutes. Would like to go one match without flailing and having to play Bruno."

⌚ 50' Sancho sends another ball over the bar. Areola does not really need to save any shots so far.

Redlyn, RedCafe: "Stop crossing. No one that's on the pitch will get on the end of that. Play it on the ground."

⌚ 46' Back underway! No changes in the line-up after the break.

Thor1138, Reddit: "So what exactly is our game plan here? Do we have a game plan? When we don't have Bruno or Ronaldo to bail us out we're looking completely lost. No discernible system of attack to break down defences, it's just individual brilliance and Inshallah...:

✍ Some half-time ratings:

Good: Bailly 7, Van de Beek 7

Average: Henderson 6, Lindelof 6, Dalot 6, Matic 6, Mata 6, Lingard 6

Poor: Sancho 5, Martial 5, Telles 4

⏳ Half-time! Man United are going out of the Carabao Cup as things stand. Changes needed after the break.

ZSx1, Reddit: "Poor in the final third man. No creativity or intensity. Jesse, Dalot and Donny have been decent tbh. At times Jadon links up nicely too. Martial and Telles have been very, very poor though."

Chris K., The Athletic: "Despite being 1 down at HT it's not been too bad, Matic is having a good game and we look lively. Also look like we're missing a bit of a focal point up top. On the other side, Noble looks completely past it."

⌚ 45' Van de Beek looks good.

@UTDTrey, Twitter: "Hope this Donny Van De Beek performance isn't going under the radar"

⌚ 44' United are still 1-0 down and still have not created much danger. A lot of crossing though.

Samurai_Penguin18, Reddit: "Such piss poor tactical ideas. Why are we cross and inshallah FC when nobody in our team can win a header?"

⌚ 36' Martial attempts another shot in the near corner. Miss.

@EraReformed, Twitter: "Martial looks to have his explosiveness back. He looks so slick on the ball"

⌚ 31' Lingard is the standout, on the other hand...

@IdMjones, Twitter: "Lingard been our stand out player so far. He looks like the only player in a red shirt up for it."

fourchainz__ , Reddit: "Lingard might actually be the one man I’m glad we kept him, he’s a great backup option"

⌚ 26' Sancho can't quite find his groove yet

@markgoldbridge, Twitter: "Sancho needs to settle. It's like he's trying too hard. He'll get the time at this club so he just needs to relax"

PoTMS, RedCafe: "Sancho looks too lightweight for this league."

Ramnik D., The Athletic: "Sancho needs to realise that he needs to demand the ball at United...... United don't play a system that creates chances by itself..... he has to show he's the main man...... take risks"

⌚ 24' Donny's attempt goes way over the bar. United need to kick on.

snausagerolly, Reddit: "20 minutes warmup. They have 15 minutes now to show their worth and 10 minutes the next half before changes."

⌚ 18' Was that a pen?

⌚ 15' United needed to concede to become better. Several opportunities for them, including a good chance for Martial.

RaymondShoots, Reddit: "start slow, concede, then start playing...wash rinse and repeat."

lex talionis, RedCafe: "Martial needs to make an effort on balls played to him."

⚽ 9' And this team goes 1-0 down. Lanzini scores for West Ham.

@samuelluckhurst, Twitter: "Telles has had a disastrous start and now West Ham have capitalised on it."

larsmaehlum, Reddit: "Had to happen, there’s just no coordination in the team. Lots of passes to nowhere."

⌚ 8' Meanwhile, the United fans are rather pleased with the quality of the supposed backup team.

JamesFrancoUnited, Reddit: "I love to have Bailly as a backup CB. Love to watch him play, but can’t do it every week."

PoTMS, RedCafe: "Was this the same centre back partnership we had the last time we won a trophy? Not bad deputies."

⌚ 2' Sancho starts on the left again, Lingard on the right. West Ham with the first chance of the game.

⌚ 1' We're underway!

♥ Now that is nice:

🗣 Solskjaer speaks to MUTV ahead of the game:

"We decided that [to rotate the side] before Sunday because we need more players to get match fitness and minutes. Alex [Telles] for example is back, he’s been training for a week and hasn’t played at all. It’s going to be a long season so we need everyone."

📄 In case you missed it, here are the starting line-ups:

Man United: Henderson; Dalot, Lindelöf, Bailly, Telles; Matic, van de Beek; Sancho, Mata, Lingard; Martial

West Ham: Areola, Fredericks, Diop, Dawson, Johnson, Masuaku, Noble, Kral, Lanzini, Yarmolenko, Bowen
