The Frenchman wants to be 'a starter and an important player' which does not appear to be possible at Old Trafford at the moment.

Therefore, the 26-year-old striker wants to leave the club in the January transfer window for a change of scenery and more first-team football.

However, Man United's position on the player remains unclear. For example, Ralf Rangnick has recently shut down Martial's agent's statement to the media.

Rangnick: 'If Martial wishes to leave, he should inform the board or myself. I don't communicate with agents'

 for the way he conveyed his desire to leave 

The German gaffer said: “I don’t communicate with agents via the media and press. The player hasn’t spoken with me or us about it.

“After the final training session before the Crystal Palace game, after having trained with team, he informed the doctor and the medical department that he would not be available because the pain in his knee is too big. We have to wait and see.

“Maybe he can train again [on Sunday] but I have to speak to the doctor first. To be honest, what his agent says via the media is not of that much interest to me.

“If he really has the wish to go to another club it should be the player who informs either the board or myself. I have never spoken about a player via the media and via agents.”

Martial fell down the pecking order under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and there has been nothing to suggest that the situation will improve after Ralf Rangnick's arrival.

The Frenchman has featured in ten games across all competition for the Red Devils so far this season, scoring once and spending just 359 minutes on the pitch.

The 26-year-old has a contract until the summer of 2024 and Man United have an option of extending the striker's deal for a further season.
