How good are Ten Hag's Ajax? Explained with simple stats

Ajax manager Erik ten Hag is among the leading candidates to replace Ralf Rangnick at Man United after the end of the season.

We've all heard about the 52-year-old's attacking style and the success he brought to Ajax. He reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019 and won two Eredivisie titles in 2019 and 2021.

So here are a few basic stats to show you good his Ajax side is this season.

They are currently top of the Eredivisie table, five points ahead of the second-placed PSV.

They have scored 69 goals in 22 matches, averaging 3.13 goals per game. Some fantastic numbers here.

Ajax's defensive record is simply jaw-dropping. They have conceded just 5 goals — that's less than a goal every four games.

It means their goals difference is +64. Breathtaking.

One may argue that these are Eredivisie numbers. "A farmers' league," to borrow an expression from football Twitter.

But Ajax's Champions League numbers are fascinating too. They finished first in their group with a perfect record, winning all six games.

They faced some tough opposition in the group, beating Dortmund, Sporting and Besiktas.

Ajax scored 20 goals in 6 group stage matches (3.33 goals per game, even a better rate than in the Eredivisie). They conceded just 5 goals, again less than a goal per game.

Managing a club in the Premier League would be a huge test of Ten Hag's abilities. But it looks like he is ready to take that step, having made Ajax one of the most entertaining and effective sides in Europe.
