Spain manager Luis Enrique surprised many when he decided to call up Barcelona B goalkeeper Arnau Tenas ahead of David de Gea after Robert Sanchez ruled himself out for their upcoming game against Iceland.
Speaking about the reason to do this, he said: “We asked the U21 manager to send us a goalkeeper as Robert Sanchez couldn’t play. They decided that Arnau Tenas was the one.
“I spoke with David, but before the game, I no longer talk about players who are not on the list. You will forgive me.”
De Gea doesn’t even seem to be the third-choice goalkeeper for Spain anymore and the fact that a reserves goalkeeper has been chosen ahead of him indicates that he doesn’t fit into Enrique’s plans.
The Spanish boss emphasizes his goalkeepers boasting impressive distribution ability and tendency to come off the line, and De Gea’s poor record with that could be why he’s been snubbed by the national team manager.
