What is Ten Hag's formation and how would it fit Man United's current squad? Explained

The subject that intrigues all Man United fans is just what the team would look like under Erik ten Hag.

In an attempt to figure this out, we've looked at the formations the Ajax manager has used the most in recent years and how the current Man United squad will fit those.

During Ajax's outstanding Champions League run in the 2018/19 season, their most common formation was a 4-2-3-1.

The double pivot consisted of a defensively secure Lasse Schone and a more adventurous Frenkie de Jong, while Donny van de Beek also dropped deep from the No.10 role to help in the build-up.

This is the exact formation Man United have used for years now - and we all know how flawed the team looks. Failing to get a reliable defensive midfielder is arguably the club's biggest screw-up for a few years already.

With the current squad - and without pending free agents Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic - we end up with the same partnership of the two players who are much better at running forward rather than sitting deep.

Most recently, however, Ten Hag's preferred formation has been a traditional 4-3-3, with Ryan Gravenbergh a more attack-minded midfielder than De Jong was during his time at Ajax.

This would allow at least one of Fred and Scott McTominay to play in their preferred role as a box-to-box midfielder - but the No.6 question is not going away.
