De Gea and Man United send messages to UK's first openly gay male footballer Jake Daniels

 has become the first openly gay male footballer in the United Kingdom after publicly coming out.

The 17-year-old has received a lot of support from teams and players for making the step, including from 

The Red Devils’ official Twitter account tweeted to him: “We're proud of you, Jake. You're an inspiration to us and many others.”

 also sent a message to Daniels, tweeting: “Amazing courage and bravery Jake.”

Daniels has become the first professional British footballer to come out as gay since Justin Fashanu did it back in 1990.

In a sensational new interview with Le Parisien ahead of the launch of his autobiography, 

 revealed: "When I was in England, they brought someone to talk to the team about homosexuality. 

"Some of my colleagues said 'it is against my religion, if there is a homosexual in this locker room, let him leave the club' and other comments. 

"At that time, I said, 'shut up'. I played with players who were gay. 

"Face to face, they opened up with me because they are afraid to speak otherwise." 

 legend continued: "There are at least two players per club who are gay. But in the world of football, if you say so, it's over." 

Evra has played at Old Trafford as well as for 

 in England but it's unclear which club he's referring to above. 

Adelaide United player Josh Cavallo has become the first openly gay active footballer but there's none in the Premier League - or any of Europe's top five leagues - so far.

Speaking about hateful online abuse at a government hearing earlier this week, 

 said: "I've just met currently a player who had come out, and he was advised by a lawyer not to come out and speak.

"I initially said 'you need to come out and speak your truth and be proud of who you are'. The reason why the lawyer advised him not to come out is because every individual is very different and you can't use a blanket approach.

"The lawyer advised him based on his experience with that individual, and he didn't think that he was strong enough mentally at that time, and have the right pieces in place to be able to withstand the media attention and the spotlight."

Coming out stories are slowly becoming more common in sports, such as ice hockey's Carl Nassib and basketball's Marco Lehmann.

However, there are currently no openly gay male athletes playing in the 

 or other major leagues despite several pro-LGBTQ+ campaigns.

Players are human and as such are fully aware of their teammates sexuality. Do we need to know l think not.
