Jamie Carragher: 'Harry Maguire needs this to be his final season at Old Trafford'

Speaking to the Telegraph, Jamie Carragher said: "Does he still have that same fury in him? It looks as if the weight of the world is on Harry Maguire shoulders, like he is a startled bunny more than the authoritative centre-back he was.

"I think it is too late at club level for Maguire. He needs this to be his final season at Manchester United and start afresh somewhere else. And now it is England's problem. When I watched Maguire in the last two games, I felt sorry for him.

"It's not a good look for any sports person. Sympathy will not get him back. Criticism of his performance against Germany is valid and justified and Gareth Southgate must assess if Maguire is mentally right for a World Cup.

"Is he able to show he can put all the issues behind him. In the past, it is something Maguire has struggled with. How can the manager make such a big call before the opening game unless Maguire is playing for his club?"

Maguire is no longer a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford under new Man United manager Erik ten Hag, starting five out of the last six games on the bench.

Southgate showed his faith in the 29-year-old by including him in the latest England squad but Maguire was a total disaster in the 3–3 draw with Germany.
