Ten Hag finally explains why Varane and Maguire rarely play together

"There are moments in certain games where they [Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane] can play together and they have already proven they can do it," explained Erik ten Hag when asked about the centre-back duo not playing together much.

"But the build-up is not that fluid when one of them is playing from the left centre-back position."

He was then asked if he had an issue with playing Varane, to which he replied: "Absolutely not. As I said, it is about tactical reasons why I chose these partnerships. I think Harry and Jonny did well."

That essentially means Varane is not starting enough games because Maguire is unable to do what he's needed in a left position.

The Manchester United boss has often played Varane and Maguire separately, opting to pair them with Jonny Evans or Victor Lindelof.

With Evans injured and Lisandro Martinez not expected back till the new year, Ten Hag may have to rely on Varane and Maguire against Luton Town.

Meanwhile, Lindelof is also available after he recovered from an illness.
