Speaking on Sky Sports, Paul Merson said: "If Manchester United beat Manchester City, looking at the last few results, Erik ten Hag should get knighted.
"I'm not exaggerating. He should get knighted, because it would be a miracle. It would be a miracle if they beat Man City.
"I didn't think in my lifetime that I'd see this. There never has been a negative goal difference for Man United [at the end of a Premier League season].
"Eighth in the league... This is still like sitting here today, in my opinion, the biggest club in the world. You know, still one of the biggest clubs in the world."
Man United suffered a 1–0 defeat against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday as their 2023/24 Premier League campaign goes from bad to worse.
The Red Devils can still salvage the campaign, however, if they manage to beat Man City in the FA Cup final at Wembley later this month.
