Erik ten Hag explains strange Man United XI for Newcastle clash & dropping Hojlund

Erik ten Hag has fielded a rather unique Man United starting XI for the final home game of the 2023/24 season against Newcastle United.

Speaking on why Rasmus Hojlund has been benched for this, he told Sky Sports: "We want to keep him fresh. It's a long season for young players - all the young players - and sometimes you see his energy levels are dropping. We want to keep him fresh, for this game coming on, we have Brighton and the cup final, so we need fresh players."

He also opened up on starting Casemrio as a centre-back again, adding: "That is the explanation (Willy Kambwala is not fit enough to start). Casemiro played some good games, he also had some downfalls.

"Sunday there was one moment he didn't do great but all over he did well and we know he can do the job, he showed it in the past so often so now he has to do the job."

The gaffer is happy to have more quality options on his bench, but gave a confusing update when asked if Bruno Fernandes or Amad Diallo will play as the forward. He replied to that: "You will see... both are possible."

Man United can go joint on points with Newcastle United with a win at Old Trafford keeping their top-6 dreams alive.
