'Can't compete with Real Madrid, PSG': Ratcliffe gets political with stark warning for Premier League

Sir Jim Ratcliffe reckons the Premier League faces a tough future unless they analyse existing rules and possibly make way for new ones to keep up with the times.

"We’ve got more accountants than we’ve got sporting people at Manchester United," said the INEOS founder on Bloomberg.

"If you’re not careful, the Premier League is going to finish up spending more time in court than it is thinking about what’s good for the league."

Now, the United Kingdom is bracing itself for elections in July. The Labour Party's proposed Football Governance Bill would come into effect if they form the next government.

What that aims to do is perform regular checks on how clubs are being managed financially. Ratcliffe is not a fan of the added scrutiny on finances as he feels it may limit the club's ability to reach an elite level.

Ratcliffe continued: "If you’ve got a government regulator at the end of the day they will regulate and that won’t be good.

"What would [financial] anchoring do? It would inhibit the top clubs in the Premiership.

"The last thing you want in the Premiership is for the top clubs in the Premiership not to be able to compete with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and PSG."

Man United have at least one season before they need to worry about facing the aforementioned sides. The Red Devils have qualified for the Europa League after winning the FA Cup.

However, they will not participate in the Champions League after an embarrassing eighth-place finish last season.
