Valverde, James and more: 3 winners and 5 losers of Zidane's regime so far this season

Winners

Fede had a very solid performance in the Supercopa. After that, his form downgraded a bit, however, he enjoyed great February and was one of the best performers in El Clasico's 2-0 win.

Interestingly, Madrid have lost whenever they played without the Uruguayan midfielder in the starting XI. The 21-year-old didn't start in Levante, Betis and Real Mallorca losses while he got only 9 minutes in Valencia draw.

Mendy has become a vital component of Zinedine Zidane's team. The 24-year-old has been a regular for Zidane since the turn of the year, with seven starts in all competitions. He has seemingly replaced Brazilian defender Marcelo as the first choice at left-back.

During February, Los Blancos managed to collect just 1 point in 2 games without Mendy at the left.

Vinicius has made 59 first-team appearances for Los Blancos. The teenage star is still growing but he's already left some fabulous memories at the Bernabeu, like the one when he scored the opener in the most recent El Clasico.

The 19-year-old winger was outstanding in February, making two assists, including the one against Atletico. As a result, he was named Madrid's Player of the Month by Futbol Mahou.

Losers

Despite being Madrid's No.1 pick almost every season, Marcelo has fallen down the pecking order and his recent showings against Celta and Levante explains why Mendy remains Zidane's top pick.

The French clearly prefers the 24-year-old to the veteran full-back due to his defensive solidity: with Mendy, Los Blancos have conceded just 11 goals in 19 matches. Meanwhile, in 15 games with Marcelo in the team, Real Madrid have shipped in 16 goals.

The 19-year-old hasn't seen a lot of first-team football lately. Zidane left Rodrygo out of the first-team squad for the Levante game in February and that was the fourth league game in a row that the Brazilian missed. As a result, in February, Rodrygo got transferred back to the second team, Castilla.

Zidane's decision to omit the young Brazilian looked rather strange, especially when you look at his impressive figures. The idea was that the youngster earns some playing time under Raul and proves that he is worth to be called up for the first team.

Zinedine Zidane has prefered playing Benzema as the lone striker in the starting XI. Recent reports claimed that he doesn't believe that Luka Jovic is the answer to Real Madrid's goalscoring problem.

The French manager has even refused to partner Jovic with Benzema. He has so far tried Bale, Lucas Vazquez, Vinicius and Rodrygo but not another classic No.9.

The Colombia international spent the previous two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich where he was an undisputable starter. However, he returned to Madrid at the start of 2019/20 and so far, he only has seven league appearances.

His stats do make good reading in general but Zidane just can't seem to get the best out of him on the pitch as much as he had hoped. Things have come to an all-time worst now with James’ string of injuries piling up and preventing him from playing in La Liga at all since October 2019.

Lucas has just two goals and two assists in mere 14 appearances this season so far in spite of working hard to make his way into the starting XI.

Despite the endless critique and the recent injury, the Spaniard continues to show admirable will on the pitch and immense dedication to Real Madrid. Lucas chose to stay at the Bernabeu, even though he had many chances to leave during the last summer.
