Although Zan Karnicnik has spent most of his career in Slovenia, where he currently plays for champions Celje, coach Matjaz Kek relies on him as a starter for the national side. The 29-year-old has nailed down the right-back position with his hard-running, relentless energy, resilience and constant desire to pressure opponents. He is also more than able to contribute in attack during crucial moments, with a fine range of forward passing - due in part to his previous experience as a midfielder. Participating in build-up play comes naturally. He said he opted to stay with Celje before the Euros as he didn’t want to risk his momentum before the tournament. “But once it’s over, I can consider moving abroad if the chance comes up.”
