'It was really hurtful for me to do': Arteta admits leaving Saliba out of EL squad was a mistake

A lot of Arsenal fans were left surprised at William Saliba's absence from Arsenal's Europa League squad - and now Mikel Arteta himself seems to regret the decision.

"I feel really bad about William Saliba because we decided that because we have so many [centre-backs] we decided to leave him out of the squad," said Arteta." It was really hurtful for me to do.

"I was hoping that Pablo Mari would be back in two weeks but he had a setback and then we don’t have Pablo and we don’t have William who is fit and available to play. When you make those decisions you can’t always think of every possible outcome."

Saliba was left out because UEFA's rules for registering players are slightly different to the ones in England. A player has to be with the club for at least 2 years to be eligible for the B list - and Saliba was only bought last summer.

There was no place for him on the A list, which was a little strange even at that time, as we had Chambers, Mari and Mustafi all out injured - the latter pair still are.

It means the Gunners will have to rely on the Gabriel - Mustafi pairing vs Dundalk and Saliba will only be able to make the squad for the weekend game vs Man United.
