Many Arsenal supporters were shocked when they saw the reliable David Ornstein reporting that the Gunners are interested in signing Ben White.
Brighton demand a £50m fee for the centre-back. Many fans don't understand why the Gunners are even considering spending money on a central defender when we have a lot of players in this position.
But this Arsenal fan thinks the team needs strengthening at centre-back because a quick and tenacious defender like Ben White would improve our attacking output.
"I think Center back is a major priority that most fans are greatly overlooking," NUPreMedMajor wrote on Reddit.
"We statistically had a good defense, but that was at the cost of an awful offense in my opinion. Because our center backs were limited, we had to stay compact in midfield and in the fullback to compensate.
"A better right center back both releases the right back to go further forward and allows our midfield to play with higher risk.
"Just look at what Virgil van Dijk allows Liverpool to do. They push every player not named VVD and Alisson into the opponent half and are able to attack with intensity.
"Same with City and Ruben Dias. Same thing with Barca during the MSN [Messi, Suarez, Neymar] era with Umtiti.
"An individually good center back frees the whole team to attack.
"You don’t have to be VVD. That’s an extreme case. Anyone with mobility, tackling, and good ball skills can play the role to varying degrees of success.
"The fact is that we have no mobile center backs in the entire team. Mari and Holding are dreadfully slow. Gabriel is okay. Saliba is the only fast center back and he’s 20 years old."
