Juventus 'in talks with Jorginho's representatives' over £40m deal as Sarri seeks reunion with midfielder

According to The National, usually a reliable source, Juventus are 'in talks with Jorginho's representatives' over a €40 million summer deal for the Italian international as ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri bids to work with his protege for the third time in his managerial career.

Jorginho, who shot to prominence as a prolific passer of the ball in Italian football under Sarri at Napoli, followed the trail of his chain-smoking gaffer to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2018, with the Blues paying an initial fee of around £50 million to secure his services.

An unimpressive debut season saw him face criticism from the fans and while the 28-year-old has enjoyed an upturn in form under Frank Lampard this term, the midfielder's future in West London seems far from settled.

Accepting Juventus' offer would see Chelsea take a financial hit from Jorginho's sale, but with the midfielder set to turn 29 in December, the summer window might be the last real opportunity for the Blues to recoup a sizeable fraction of the fee they had spent on him in 2018.

Cashing in on Jorginho would hand a considerable boost to the club's transfer kitty, with Lampard yet to stamp his authority on the squad in terms of bringing in fresh recruits.

Here's one of Jorginho's best goals at Chelsea:

Several reports have emerged in the press over the past few months claiming that a new striker and a full-back are top of Chelsea's transfer agenda in the summer and with Lampard already having a plethora of midfield options at his disposal, sacrificing Jorginho might not be the worst possible option.

Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko are due to be back at Stamford Bridge in the summer following the expiry of their loan spells but neither is likely to be moved on for a big price, meaning that Jorginho is certainly one of the club's saleable assets.

Lampard's decision to offload Jorginho might also be influenced by the rise of 18-year-old Billy Gilmour, who showed a tremendous level of maturity in his performances against Liverpool and Everton before the break.

Meanwhile, Sarri has used Rodrigo Bentancur and Miralem Pjanic as his holding midfielders this season, but the report adds that the manager wants Jorginho to play that role in the foreseeable future.

Chelsea have reportedly been linked with West Ham starlet Declan Rice, who seems to be a like-for-like replacement for Jorginho, but bringing in a replacement might not be indispensable for the Blues, with N'Golo Kante already in the squad.
