How Conte made 2 changes that transformed Lukaku from a Chelsea reject to a €100m signing

In the next few hours, Chelsea will announce the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for €115m.

Blues faithful don't need reminding that Lukaku is the same player Chelsea didn't want in 2015 when they sold him to Everton.

The Blues had good reason to sell the striker- he definitely wasn't the striker he is now.

Four summer transfer windows after moving to Everton, Lukaku had won the hearts of Evertonians, tried and failed to replicate the feat in Manchester and landed in Milan - a €74m signing for Inter.

Antonio Conte quickly began work on the player. He had tried and failed to sign Romelu for Chelsea in 2017.

Here's what Conte did to make Lukaku the player he is.

Improving his pace and physique

Conte's first task was to change Lukaku from a player often criticized for his poor physique to a nimble-footed attacker with the physicality to bully defenders.

In doing this, Conte made his striker work extra hard during his training sessions.

Lukaku said, as per Sky Sports: "The training sessions that we do - nobody trains as hard as us. Never. You are really at your fittest.

"I spoke to my agent and said, 'I am suffering a lot in training because I never did this type of work.'When I was looking around me no one was moaning, everyone was getting on with it," Lukaku added.

The result was instant - Lukaku was upgraded from a player who only managed 15 goals in 45 games in his last season at Man United. To a 30+ goal poacher in his first season with Inter. He scored 34 times by the way.

Improve the creativity around him

Conte made sure he built a team that knew how to create a lot of chances in his 3-5-2 system.

Lukaku's partnership with Lautaro Martinez was key. Both players combined for 21 assists in the 2020/21 campaign.

Martinez directly assisted 3 of Lukaku's goals, but the pair constantly overloaded the flanks, dragged defenders away from each other, thereby opening up spaces for the latter to exploit.

Last season, Inter created as many as 85 big chances, only Atalanta and Juventus created more.

Lukaku said of Conte's system, as quoted by Sky Sports: "We create a lot of chances and we have a great defence because we don't give up until the end. It's great to see and for me.

"Finally, my full potential can come out," the 28-year-old added.

Lukaku wasn't mincing words, his full potential did blossom. The Belgian striker riddled the Serie A with 24 goals, 30 in all competitions.

Now confirmed as a 30-goals per season striker, Chelsea can't wait to lay hands on Lukaku. But they do have Conte to thank.
