Why Alonso again? Why Havertz on the bench? Answering 7 questions as Chelsea demolish Palace

Chelsea defeated Crystal Palace but some fans had been disappointed with Tuchel's selection even before the kick-off.

They moaned about the starting XI in the comments, and we have decided to answer the most popular questions now the game has ended 3-0.

Why Havertz was on the bench?

Kai had trained for less than three weeks before that game. Given he had played 120 minutes in the European Super Cup, fatigue was probably the main reason why Tuchel decided to keep him on the bench.

Why Alonso over Chilwell again?

Marcos was absolutely spectacular against Villarreal, and he certainly deserved a place in the starting XI.

Additionally, Chilwell may not be ready to play 90 minutes yet because he, like other England, Italian and Brazilian internationals, were given an extended break after the Euros and Copa America.

Why is James not in the XI?

The same as the one above: Reece may not be 100 per cent fit yet. Also putting him in the XI would mean switching Azpi to right centre-back, which consequently means bench for Trevoh Chalobah. And we don't want that, don't we?

Why are Chilwell and Emerson on the bench instead of a midfielder?

Because Kante was not fit for the game and Loftus-Cheek had tested positive for Covid-19 before the game.

Meanwhile, the likes of Barkley and Drinkwater are not registered in the Premier League squad. Only 25 players are allowed to be registered, and Ross and Danny simply couldn't make the list.

Additionally, Chalobah and Thiago Silva can play in midfield and could have deputised for Jorginho or Kovacic in case either the Italian or the Croatian had to go off.

Why does Pulisic start after a poor game v Villarreal?

Because he's a quality player and one poor game doesn't change that. Additionally, see question one.

Why does Werner play up front?

It's probably because Lukaku was still in quarantine and therefore unavailable, Havertz was tired and Abraham was (and still is) on the verge of a move to AS Roma—imagine Tammy would have gotten injured.

Why this Chalobah?

Because the youngster was electric against Villarreal, Thiago Silva was not fully fit, and also because Tuchel probably wanted to see him in competitive league action before making a decision on whether to send him on loan or keep him for this season.
