Why do Chelsea want to sell stake in women's team?

Earlier this week, reports emerged that Chelsea are considering selling a stake in their women's team. The Blues want to raise around $200m with the move.

The Athletic report that the reason why the club wants to do it is the desire to grow the female team. It's one of the powerhouses of English and European women's football but it brings less profit than American teams.

Getting an investor of the right profile could open up avenues for new deals and partnerships which would increase the revenue.

Another reason is getting cash, although the club insists that it's not the case. Chelsea believe that the sale of the minority stake in the women's team would be interpreted as a 'signal to grow women's game'.
