In 2019, Barcelona were beaten 4-0 in a Champions League semi-final away at Liverpool. Barca came into that second leg leading 3-0.
Gerard Pique claims that his relationship with Barcelona first first-choice goalie Marc-Andre Ter Stegen fell apart from that point.
"My relationship with Ter Stegen was no longer good after Anfield night," Pique said.
"Messi was in great shape and was doing everything on the field, but the group remained indifferent, and I was among them.
"We have all betrayed Messi because we did not help him fulfil his promise to the fans In the dressing room, some people were silent, and there are those who were browsing the phone, and there are those who were indifferent and laughing, except Messi, who is crying while sitting on the chair in pain.
"Ter Stegen was very bad. In matches, the goalkeeper has to help, even if the team is bad. He lets balls hit him very easily.
"Messi gave everything he had that year," Pique concludes.
Barcelona won La Liga that year but ultimately failed to clinch the Champions League. That was the closest Barca had come to winning the competition since they won it in 2015.
