Sepp Blatter: 'World Cup 2030 is absurd'

FIFA World Cup 2030 will take place in Spain, Portugal and Morocco but the opening three games will be in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay each.

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter criticised the decision: "It is absurd to tear the tournament apart in this way. The World Cup finals must be a compact event."

Blatter believes the tournament in 2030 should take place in South America as a means to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first-ever World Cup that took place in Uruguay in 1930.

"For historical reasons, the 2030 World Cup should have belonged exclusively in South America," Blatter said.

Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay presented a joint bid for the tournament but lost to Spain, Portugal and Morocco. As a concession, these countries will receive a World Cup game each and there are seven more years to ponder over the logistics.

It must be added the six host nations will automatically qualify for the tournament, meaning 12.5% of the total number of teams get a bye.
