'John Achterberg has definitely improved him as a keeper': Kirkland hails coach's impact on Alisson

Former Liverpool shot-stopper Chris Kirkland has complimented Alisson Becker, noting that his progress at Anfield has been aided by goalkeeping coach John Achterberg.

"It's presence, it's temperament, it's everything," Kirkland said on the Blood Red podcast as relayed by the Liverpool Echo.

"Since he's come to Liverpool, he's got better. He's playing with top players, but John Achterberg has definitely improved him as a keeper.

"Keepers are together for long periods and you have to get on with your goalie coach, you have to like his work."

In December last year, the 27-year-old received the first Yachine award but the Soviet keeper's widow was disappointed with the look of the trophy:

This is not the first time Kirkland compliments Alisson and Achterberg. In March last year, he compared the Brazilian to Simon Mignolet.

"John Achterberg, the goalkeeper coach there, and Alisson were training with Simon Mignolet. Those two were great but Alisson was just incredible."

Alisson joined the Reds in 2018 from AS Roma and instantly became the Reds' first-choice keeper, providing calm and confidence between the sticks.

Kirkland was Liverpool Women's goalkeeping coach for some time but then quit the role and is now running his own football academy.
