PSG confirmed as Ligue 1 champs: Here's what it could mean for Liverpool

Ligue 1 has confirmed the decision to crown PSG the champions after the 2019/20 season was ended.

The champion and the final standings were decided according to the average of points earned per match played.

As things stand, here is what the Ligue 1 table looks like now:

1. Paris Saint-Germain

2. Olympique De Marseille

3. Stade Rennais FC

***

19. Amiens SC

20. Toulouse FC

Since Amiens and Toulouse are relegated, two Ligue 2 sides, Lorient and RC Lens, get promoted to the top tier.

The league's statement reads: "The Board of Directors voted unanimously to award the Ligue 1 Conforama championship to Paris Saint-Germain and the Domino’s Ligue 2 championship to FC Lorient for the 2019/20 season.

"The Board of Directors has decided that two clubs will be relegated from Ligue 1 to Ligue 2 and two clubs will be promoted from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1.

"The Board of Directors reiterates that the objective is to restart Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 on 22 and 23 August 2020, at the latest. The official start dates for the 2020/21 season will be finalised in agreement with the official broadcasters and in accordance with governmental decisions."

The decision made in France is a huge blow to Liverpool haters who want the Premier League season declared null and void, probably just because that would deny the Reds their well-deserved title.

Before the Ligue 1 campaign was stopped, PSG were on top of the league, 12 points clear of Marseille, with 11 games left to play. That means mathematically they were quite far from securing the title, compared to Liverpool.

So, it appears there are now three possible scenarios for English football authorities:

  • Complete the season playing all games behind closed doors (champion: most likely, Liverpool)
  • End the season and decide the champion based on current standings (champion: Liverpool)
  • End the season and decide the champions based on the points-per-game average (champions: Liverpool)

Which decision looks best to you, Reds? Let us know in the comments or on our blog platform!
