Nat Phillips and 2 more Liverpool players who deserve to stay next season despite exit rumours

Nat Phillips

In there was an award to the most improved player in the Premier League, Nat Phillips would've been a strong contender: in his first season as a first-team regular, the 24-year-old was a key part of the team that secured the Champions League place.

He's unlikely to be content with the role of a fifth-choice centre-back, at which he has hinted recently. Ibrahima Konate's arrival might put Phillips in a tough spot.

However, now that he's had the experience of the Premier League and the Champions League football, it makes sense to at least test Nat against the likes of Joe Gomez and Joel Matip - he might already deserve a bigger role.

Xherdan Shaqiri

It's been a long time since Shaqiri won his 'cult hero' status from at least some Liverpool fans after his brace against Man United.

Since then, however, his role has diminished, and the winger only made 21 Premier League appearances since the start of the 2019/20 season.

Despite that, he continues to impress on the international stage, remaining a key player for Switzerland at Euro 2020. It speaks as much about his professionalism as about his skills.

Jurgen Klopp could do worse than to keep such a player in the squad but the question, as ever, is whether Shaqiri accepts a fringe role on the pitch for another year.

Neco Williams

It appears increasingly likely that the Wales international could be sold this summer, with six Premier League clubs keen on him.

Neco's desire to play more regularly in the top flight is understandable, and Liverpool do an honourable thing by not standing in his way.

However, unless a new right-back is arriving over the summer, Trent Alexander-Arnold will be left without a proper back-up (as James Pearce reports, Joe Gomez and academy graduate Conor Bradley are seen as players who can provide substantial cover).

Williams already has plenty of experience at club and international level and has not looked completely out of place. Unless he really pushes for an exit, it makes little sense for Liverpool to sell the 20-year-old.
