Liverpool likely to offload Matip this summer, Gvardiol could replace him – Neil Jones

Liverpool are likely to offload Joel Matip at the end of the season, per Goal's Neil Jones.

Matip's form has been at an all-time low this season with the Cameroonian losing his place in the team first to Ibrahima Konate and then to Joe Gomez after Ibou's injury.

Gomez has also been under-par lately, but the Reds will keep him at the club for the coming year given he's a homegrown player and recently signed a new contract, the source say.

But Matip will likely be replaced at the end of the season by powerful Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol. That's if Liverpool are prepared to pay what it takes to get him.

Centre-backs come at a premium nowadays as can be seen with Chelsea who paid £80m to sign an injury-prone Wesley Fofana last summer. Others like Harry Maguire and Matthijs De Ligt have cost upwards of £70m in the past few years.

It's perhaps why Leipzig have set Gvardiol's asking price at a staggering £98m, according to Sky Sports.
