'As bad as Pickford's on Van Dijk': Liverpool fans puzzled reckless tackle on Konate went unpunished

Liverpool's win over Sheffield United was not without scary moments. The biggest of all was a pretty horrible tackle on Ibrahima Konate in the Reds' penalty area.

Sheffield United forward Will Osula went high with a sliding tackle, so Konate was lucky to avoid a major injury and play on till the final whistle.

The episode went unnoticed by referee Stuart Atwell and VAR Chris Kavanagh, despite a long delay for treatment.

Naturally, Liverpool fans were rather unhappy, although their displeasure would've been even stronger if Liverpool hadn't gone on to score twice, or in case of a serious injury to Konate.

Jack Lusby: "Shocking that challenge from Will Osula on Ibrahima Konate wasn't called back by VAR. As bad as Jordan Pickford's on Virgil van Dijk without even the excuse of 'going for the ball'. Surprised Konate escaped injury, though I still wouldn't rule one out."

Mads Kalvik Hegstad: "It's quite incredible that it doesn't break Konate's knee here. Very lucky. Not near the ball. VAR sits quietly in the boat. This is much worse than 90% of the red cards I have seen this year in PL."

Sarah James: "Good gosh! I didn’t think it was that bad in real time, but on second look, that’s a reckless/dangerous scissor tackle on Konate which VAR shoulda flagged up to the ref. Premier League officiating standards are at an all-time low."

MrBDK: "How this wasn’t even checked for a red card for Osula is a disgrace. Genuinely could have snapped Konate’s leg. Disgusting player, incompetent referees"

Dawso_66: "Yeah we won but I still wanna see that foul on Konate looked at by VAR"

Mike: "Said it during the game how unbelievable this was that it didn’t even get checked by VAR for a red card, it isn’t a slip nor is it a natural fall, he’s gone for Konaté on purpose there, horrid"
