'We would’ve been a good pairing': Man City legend explains why he would like to play alongside Van Dijk

Although Liverpool only secured the Carabao Cup, the day at Wembley will be etched in memory for Virgil van Dijk's outstanding display. As the Liverpool captain, he scored the lone goal against Chelsea and led a team plagued by injuries to an improbable victory.

This remarkable performance served as a reminder of van Dijk's status as one of the Premier League's finest centre-backs.

Vincent Kompany, another legendary defender, acknowledged van Dijk's greatness. When asked by Sky Sports to assemble a seven-a-side team featuring modern greats, the Burnley boss expressed his desire to have Van Dijk alongside him in defence.

Kompany said: "I’d have to play with Virgil, yeah I think we would’ve been a good pairing. Now, I couldn’t play with him, because I’d have to do all the running, but the younger version of him when he could’ve done the running for me."

"His understanding of the game, and obviously he’s able to back it up with the execution as well, but his understanding of the game, his leadership, his all-round profile as a defender I really think that it’s very rare, to have very few weaknesses."

This season Van Dijk made 46 appearances for the club. Liverpool defender scored 4 goals and made 2 assists.
