Long-term faithful vs impressive loanee: how Chelsea history can help Man United handle goalkeeper mess

Tribuna.com's editorial team argue that Man United could take a page out of Jose Mourinho's playbook ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is facing a dilemma this summer as the Manchester United manager has to settle on a first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2020/21 season.

David De Gea's season continues to be plagued by inconsistency with the Spaniard making another mistake leading to a goal in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham on Friday.

Dean Henderson, meanwhile, has developed into one the best goalkeepers in the Premier League on loan at Sheffield United and the Englishman reportedly believes he's ready to be the no.1 at Old Trafford.

The situation is surprisingly similar to something that former Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho had to deal with at Chelsea in the summer of 2014.

The Blues had an established first-choice goalkeeper and a club legend in Petr Cech, who was 32 years old at the time but his form started to dip a little.

Meanwhile, Thibaut Courtois was making a name for himself out on loan at Atletico Madrid, reaching the Champions League final with Diego Simeone's men.

Mourinho opted to replace Cech with Courtois while keeping the veteran goalkeeper at the club. The Belgian became the first-choice shot-stopper while the Czech still featured 16 games before leaving for Arsenal.

Solskjaer could do something similar this summer by giving Henderson a run as the club's no.1 without letting De Gea go. In the end, this could end up being a win-win for the Red Devils: the manager will see whether the Englishman is capable of performing at the top level and whether the Spaniard will react in the right way.
