Maguire and Rashford not in form but neutrals (and Roy Keane) point to Gareth Southgate as main culprit

Speaking after England’s 0-1 loss to Denmark in the UEFA Nations League, Roy Keane jumped to sympathize with Harry Maguire and said on ITV: “Obviously whatever's going on in his head, it's all over the place. You could see as soon as he sees the red card coming out. You have to have sympathy for him.

“I think sometimes he [Gareth Southgate] knows Harry has had a tough time on and off the pitch, a pat on the back would have helped him. That would have settled him from Gareth.”

Southgate’s decision making against Denmark was definitely questionable and despite Maguire and Marcus Rashford not being in the best of form, neutral fans explained why the gaffer deserves his criticism.

  • Jockey500 via Daily Mail: “Why did Southgate pick an out of form player, he's been out of form since the start of the season, time to look for a new England boss I think, Southgate just hasn't got the pedigree for me.
  • Freecs via Daily Mail: “Southgate has too much ego for a manager who barely achieved anything.”
  • Zipdip via Daily Mail: “Well the manager had to act it was plain to see in the first 10 mins that Maguire was all over the place,he had to be pulled off ,better still why did Southgate pick him,by doing that the whole defense was on edge, They knew Maguire was not playing well. The manager has to grow some and make the hard decisions.”
  • Go4broke: “It's Southgate who needs a holiday. He has had nothing but trouble from his chosen teams. Just highlights what a load of idiots some of these English footballers are.”
