As reported by Samuel Luckhurst, a top source for the club, Raphael Varane was ready to leave Real Madrid ONLY to join Manchester United.
This claim has been supported by The Telegraph as well, who report Varane could've earned more money by extending his stay at Los Blancos. However, he opted to move to Old Trafford in search of a new challenge.
Luckhurst adds that Varane used to be a boyhood fan of United, idolising Rio Ferdinand while growing up. And interestingly, the legendary defender even texted the Frenchman before his move was finalised.
Ferdinand forged one of the most iconic centre-back partnerships of the 2000s alongside Nemanja Vidic. Hopefully, Varane will have learnt a thing or two from his inspiration as he prepares to play alongside Harry Maguire in 2021/22.
