'He's not Van Dijk 2.0': Some Man United fans discuss if Harry Maguire should be sold

Harry Maguire had a good game against Leeds but he was the exact opposite in the 4-1 loss to Manchester City.

The problem is even when Maguire is 'at his best', he doesn't justify his £80 million price tag. And he's far from replacing any of the centre-backs playing for top European sides.

With a contract till 2025, how do you get rid of the club captain? Here's what we spotted some Manchester United fans discussing on RedCafe:

💬 Slevs: "How do you sell him? Sound out buyers. Worst case scenario set a really low asking price, and take the hit for the good of the club. Listen I like the guy but he isn't good enough for our level and never will be. Stop dreaming he's the next Virgil van Dijk. Just because you were stupid enough to pay that much money on a defender doesn't mean he's VVD version 2."

💬 redshaw: "I'm not trying to even take the piss when I compare him to a sloth. He's 29 now and isn't going to get any better sadly. I don't see any improvements since the Leicester away performance and perhaps he's worse now.

"He's so laboured with his actions it's like the team has a millstone back there. Again unless he can somehow identify a problem and move to improving his agility and speed it's not worth keeping him on. We know he's not the fastest but this season he's especially slow and lethargic in his tackles.

"It's not like he's the only one though. Is there something seriously going on with the eating and fitness training? Other teams look like they're Peds while we're on performance de-enhancing drugs."

💬 DanielofLeyLand: "I think Maguire needs the pressure taking off him. He needs to be relieved of the captaincy and get back to focusing on his game.

"Unfortunately, our entire back line is either injury-prone, inconsistent or both. When I look at the players we have:

"[Raphael] Varane, Maguire, [Phil] Jones, [Eric] Bailly, [Victor] Lindelof. None of them have been superb this season. We need to rid ourselves of Jones, Bailly and Lindelof and bring in defenders to put pressure on Maguire and Varane at the back without having the pressure of being £80m player set to solve all our problems."

To be fair, the problems at our club are so deep-rooted that selling just Maguire is not the solution. If anything, that could complicate the situation further.

That said, Maguire needs to be more consistent and start acting like a real leader on the pitch and not do anything silly.
