Speaking on his official YouTube podcast, Rio Ferdinand said: "Manchester United should target someone like Max Aarons.
"You could put him like a Chris Smalling-type signing where they come in and they have an impact.
"They may not be straight starters immediately but they go and they stay there for 10 years and have a really good career and they impact the club at different levels."
Smalling is rarely remembered by Old Trafford supporters these days but the centre-back played a key role in the 2012/13 title-winning campaign after joining from Fulham in 2010.
Aarons has been relegated to the Championship with Norwich City but the 22-year-old full-back in expected to stay in the top flight after attracting interest from several Premier League sides.
