'World Cup effect': Fan names short-term solution to replace Ronaldo up front

Man United will be in the market for a new striker in the January transfer window after releasing Cristiano Ronaldo from his contract.

A fan named an interesting name to replace him in the winter, writing on a post for The Athletic: “I’m telling you, it will be a short term fix, and his name is Enner Valencia! The World Cup effect is coming.

“I don’t think given his current woes that it will be Toney. Gakpo and Rafael Leao, as good as they are, would make us very bloated on the left - I think the only reason Erik brings in one of them is if he believes they can do it through the middle or Rashford can. But there’s no doubt Rashford is better from the left, although I’m sure he scored from the right on Monday!

“Can’t understand why Choupo-Moting would come from Bayern mid season given their likelihood of winning the league and being in the champions league too?”

Enner Valencia is currently the joint-highest scorer at the World Cup, having scored a brace in Ecuador’s 2-0 win over Qatar in the opening game.

The 33-year-old currently plays for Fenerbahce, having scored 13 goals and provided 4 assists in 12 league appearances this season.

While United haven’t made any move for him, Valencia could be a solid short-term option for the Red Devils and add more depth to the frontline.
