Fabrizio Romano offers update on Man United midfield plan for next season (reliability: 5 stars)

Man United have decided that they will try to sign at least one midfielder in the summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The club yet has to decide to future of Marcel Sabitzer whose loan expires after this season. However, this does not affect their thinking in terms of going for another midfield player.

Two of their regular starters, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, are already 31 years old. Scott McTominay and Fred might not be enough as rotation options.

Last summer, Man United were openly chasing Frenkie De Jong, but the Dutchman refused to leave Barcelona. Now that his role at the catalan club has grown, such a move is even less likely, so United will have to look for new targets.

The Red Devils' priority remains to sign a new striker, though, as neither Anthony Martial nor Wout Weghorst fully convince in the role.

Man United have realized that they might not be able to sign quality midfielders like Frenkie de Jong or Declan Rice in the summer, as per ESPN.

The Red Devils aren’t ready to spend over £100m for them and are now looking at cheaper alternatives.

Man United have identified Chelsea midfielders Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic as two possible summer targets.

The club believes they can sign at least one of the two midfielders for cheap fees due to their contracts nearing expiration.

The Red Devils are also interested in a possible free transfer to sign Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot in the summer.

Erik ten Hag reportedly wants a midfielder who can compete with Christian Eriksen in the no.8 role, but that will depend on the budget he’s given in the summer transfer window.
