Always good to have a healthy understanding of the situation. Though Nacho declined every outgoing offer this summer [and there were quite a lot of deals on the table], he knows that his role at the team is not at all critical.
Fernandez is behind Ramos, Varane and Militao in terms of picking the starting line-up but that doesn't bother the defender. Nacho wants to play his part and help the club in times when a qualified substitute is needed.
According to previous reports, the talks between Real Madrid and Sevilla were quite advanced and our club were allegedly open to letting the defender leave. However, Nacho was adamant in his desire to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu and instantly refused the transfer.
The defender is in his 19th season at the Casa Blanca with 190 appearances and 15 trophies to his name. The Spaniard has been at Real Madrid longer than Ramos, Marcelo and Karim Benzema and was involved in many of our important victories.
Fernandez is a unique player in the current squad. Out of all the players in our team, only Nacho has never worn any other team's shirt. The defender started his professional career at the Bernabeu and it looks like he intends to end it there. Only three footballers have done that - Santiago Bernabeu (1911-1927), Chendo (1982-1988) and Sanchis (1983-2001).
