The Germany-born defender had a rough time with Wolfsburg, suing them for allegedly unpaid bonuses and, while on loan at Borussia Dortmund, speaking publicly about his struggles there, especially with Mark van Bommel, Wolfsburg’s coach at the time. “I was going mad and wanted to grab Van Bommel. But that’s not how things are done, you have to sit with him and talk like a politician,” he said in 2021. After refusing to apologise for his comments, Marin Pongracic found himself unwanted and eventually ended up at Lecce, where he has had a good season in Serie A.
