Italy’s latecomer, Verona’s Michael Folorunsho earned a first call-up to the Italian national team in March and wasn’t expected to reach this level even a year ago. A box-to-box midfielder with an impressive body structure, Folorunsho can also play as a trequartista or as an atypical No 9. “He is a beast,” Italy coach Luciano Spalletti says. Born in Rome, with Nigerian origins, Folorunsho had a wonderful season with Verona and is expected to play for Napoli in the 2024-25 campaign. He celebrates his goals with the “Folo Mask”, a particular pose: a hand on his face, the other miming a gun. He cited Antonello Venditti and 883, an Italian pop group extremely popular in the Nineties, among his favourite artists.
