Toby Alderweireld hopes to 'bring just a little bit of joy' after donating tablets to hospitals amid coronavirus crisis

With the spread of the coronavirus pandemic continuing to wreak havoc across Europe, Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld wants to lift the spirits of the affected after donating tablets to hospitals and nursing homes.

"We are already getting messages from people who can now speak to their families and it has been a real help," the 31-year-old told BBC. "I didn't do it for a reaction, just to help but it has been so positive.

"In the UK we are a little bit behind Europe, I was getting news from across Europe so I was in a coronavirus state of mind. I called my dad and said we have to do something, we have to try to help.

"We were brainstorming, my dad contacted some hospitals and they said we need some tablets for people who are isolated, especially older people who don't have a phone. It keeps a visual connection with loved ones, which was impossible otherwise.

"It makes me very happy and makes me sad that I can't help everyone but I am trying the best I can. If it can bring just a little bit of joy to their lives it is great."

Chelsea have also tried to do their bit in helping the world combat the spread of the killer bug.

Roman Abramovich got it going by offering NHS staff free accommodation at the Millenium Hotel near the Stamford Bridge.

Players followed the suit: Christian Pulisic made a generous donation to American food banks, while Reece James helped to launch the #FootballUnited campaign to support local communities.

Billy Gilmour, Mason Mount and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, meanwhile, will take part in a FIFA 20 charity stream along with players like Gareth Bale and Jordan Pickford.
