Kante 9, Mendy 8: rating Chelsea stars in Real Madrid win

The Senegalese star was poised to endure pressure and came up big whenever called upon. Made two excellent saves in the first half to deny Karim Benzema, showcasing excellent reflexes to do so.

His crossing collection, distribution was all top class and Mendy earned a well-deserved clean sheet with his superb work in the goal.

Kante was all over the place and tormented Real Madrid with his excellent pressing skills. Played a big role in the opener, taking out multiple defenders with his one-two before passing it for Kai Havertz to set it up. Then set up the second by winning back the ball outside Madrid’s area and playing in Pulisic to assist Mount’s goal.

Neutralized Madrid’s chances of creating chances through the middle and tapped into his three-lung version to dominate Madrid’s midfielders & run the show again.

Timo Werner – 7.0

In a game where he had to shine to regain the love from Chelsea fans, Werner did just that. After having one ruled out in the first half, he linked-up well with Kante before scoring his easy goal with a cute header.

A really energetic figure on counter-attacks and set up some good stuff with his clever passes in the final third.

Looking like Chelsea’s own Batman with that face-mask, Rudiger was an absolute beast at the back. Frustrated Madrid with his clutch challenges and aggressive tackles to catch opponents off guard.

Moved the ball forward bravely and showed impressive positioning to close down all the danger areas.

Kai Havertz – 6.0

A bit of a mixed bag from Kai. He caused a lot of problems on the counter-attack with his movement and used his physicality to trouble Madrid.

Attempted a gorgeous chipped finish before that ended up being an assist for Werner’s goal. Missed a few good chances and his decision-making still needs a bit improvement in the final third.

Mason Mount – 7.5

Perhaps not as involved in attacks as he’d want to be, but Mount ended up getting his goal late on! Involved in some nice counter-attacks with his brilliant dribbling runs and worked hard defensively too.

Capped off a solid performance with a clever finish to book a place in the finals for his side.

Jorginho – 8.0

While Kante was the more aggressive midfielder on the day, Jorginho did his job perfectly in a deeper role. Made 6 interceptions, won 4 duels and maintained an excellent passing accuracy all game long.

Was in the right place at the right time on a consistent basis and protected his defence brilliantly.

Thiago Silva – 7.0

The experienced defender was responsible for handling Karim Benzema and ultimately got the better off him. Benzema got past him on a few occasions, but Silva was rock-solid for the majority of the game.

Maintained a terrific defensive line and multiple key clearances to keep the clean sheet. Might be angry with himself for not scoring off the set-pieces though.

After tormenting Madrid in the first half, Pulisic made a great impact from the bench in this one. He troubled a tired Madrid defence with his impressive movement and smartly spotted out Mount for his goal.

The rest:

Azplicueta: 6.5, Christensen – 6.0, Chilwell – 6.0

The subs:

James – 6.0, Ziyech – N/R, Giroud – N/R
