'Fighting back tears': Julian Nagelsmann explains why Germany's Euro 2024 exit hurts more

Speaking on Germany’s elimination from Euro 2024 after losing to Spain, Julian Nagelsmann reacted: “We did well in the second half. We were much closer to the winner than the Spanish.

“In the end, I don't think we were necessarily much better, but we were a bit clearer in the final third. It hurts because we can only make up for it in two years' time. And there will probably never be another tournament at home in my career.

“If we had been listless, we would have deserved to lose and we wouldn't be standing here fighting back tears. Tomorrow night we'll get together again.

“I don't know what the plan is now, because I didn't plan for an elimination. The job for me and my team now is to think about the squad and what is the right thing to do in the Nations League.”

Nagelsmann signed a two-year contract extension to stay on as the Germany manager until the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He was linked to the Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund head coach roles, but will look to continue his pursuit of winning a coveted international trophy after failing to clinch the Euro 2024 title.

Spain – Germany 2:1 (0:0, 1:1, 1:0)5 July, 16:00, Mercedes Benz Arena
