'People were calling for his head': Dwight Yorke praises Harry Maguire's resilience

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Dwight Yorke said: "Listen, I'm happy for the kid. If I was in Erik ten Hag's position I would have dealt with it differently. In hindsight, it's easy for me to sit on the outside and say certain thing.

"But yeah, it's good for Harry Maguire to come back and do what he's done. It takes a lot of courage. I think when people are calling for your head and you're getting out of the club it's hard to turn that around.

"Even though he seems to have had the last couple of weeks go for him, I still think we are in for a very difficult time whether Maguire is there or not. It's a difficult time. It's been a real topsy-turvy season for us."

An injury crisis in defence forced Ten Hag to turn to Maguire after stripping the Manchester United centre-back of the captain's armband this summer.

However, the 30-year-old has been really solid at the back and continues to be part of the starting XI despite Raphael Varane returning to full fitness.
