Is Bayern Munich's crisis exaggerated?

Is Bayern Munich's crisis exaggerated?

Bayern Munich are in trouble. Everyone knows it, including their own players.

But just how bad is their crisis? Should Arsenal fans stay cautious ahead of the Champions League quarterfinal? Let us tackle the issue.

After 11 years of dominating the Bundesliga, Bayern are about to concede the crown to Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen. With 6 games to go, the gap is 16 points.

Nothing seems to be working out for Thomas Tuchel's men, and Tuchel himself could be set for a premature exit.

But the truth is it hasn't always been this way this season.

Though Bayern hadn't been at their best with Tuchel, everything seems to have fallen apart following the 3-0 defeat to Bayer in February. Until that clash, the two teams had been toe to toe domestically, but the victory sent Bayer five points ahead.

The gap kept growing every week: the following matchday, Bayern lost 3-2 to a modest Bochum. They did squeeze in an 8-1 thrashing of Mainz, which probably tells you more about the state of Bundesliga's teams at the bottom.

In a recent clash, Bayern lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund at home, something that hadn't happened since April 2014. They also lost 3-2 to the promoted Heidenheim despite leading 2-0 at the break.

The Champions League could become Bayern's consolation but even here, the things are far from smooth. They did beat Lazio 3-1 on aggregate, but the first leg was a 1-0 defeat in which Bayern set an unwanted record — they made 17 shots, but none were on target.

Bayern were also eliminated from the German Cup and lost 3-0 in the Super Cup clash in August in what was a precursor of things to come.

Should Arsenal or any other team knock Bayern out of the Champions League, this will be the German team's first trophyless season since 1991/92.

None of this, however, indicates that the Gunners are up for an easy clash. For all their brilliance in the Premier League, Mikel Arteta's men fare worse in cup competitions. Last year, they bowed out of the Europa League at the hands of Sporting, while this time around, it took a penalty shoot-out to advance past Porto in the Champions League Round of 16.

And don't forget about one man who doesn't want to sink with this ship — Harry Kane.
